Black Girl Magic at its best!

This past Wednesday Essence Magazine was acquired by Essence Ventures, LLC an independent African-American owned company headed by Michelle Ebanks. Essence Magazine was previously owned by Time Inc. who acquired the magazine in 2005. This is huge! Essence Ventures LLC has an all African American female executive team and complete Black ownership! This means African American females will be making all of the decisions and hold all of the power.

I love seeing stories like this. It shows African American women and little girls that they can be power players in business aka the Boss. It shows that we can be more than a Beyonce or Kim Kardashian. More importantly it shows little girls that it is ok to use your brain versus your body!

Now don’t get me wrong, being a successful entertainer is a good thing as well. I just believe that using your brain is better. For far too long African American children have been bullied for showing intelligence. In addition, to me, mainstream society looks at African American women as unintelligent. Like we don’t have the capacity to become doctors, lawyers, business owners, or business moguls. I am speaking from my experiences. I have been treated as if I didn’t have a brain in my head, especially in corporate America. When I did display my intelligence, I was immediately discredited and immediately targeted as someone to watch out for.

So today I raise my glass (of wine of course!) to all those female execs at Essence Ventures LLC! I look forward to hearing of more about their future acquisitions and plans!

Until next time…Enjoy the journey!
